Interview with Dr. Francesca Torriani
Sept. 20th, 2006
DK: Beautifully stated. You are an expert on infectious
diseases. Chiropractors for years have seen changes take
place in patients in places, other than just muscles; in
stomachs, in their lungs and even in things like their
immune system. What is your opinion on this?
FT: There’s different nerves coming out of the spine.
Clearly there are nerves that have as their function
movement. There are nerves that have as their function
bringing back what we feel. There are also nerves that
are responsible for the environment. The sympathetic and
parasympathetic nervous systems control the smooth muscles
in our body. The involuntary muscles are in our intestines,
directing respiratory function, cardiac function, and our
heart to beat. If you have some kind of compression that
might affect how your heart beats, how you breathe, how
your GI tract functions: nausea, diarrhea, constipation.
DK: As chiropractors that’s what we see on a daily basis.
Which brings me to the next question. You are in the
medical community. What opinions have you heard about
chiropractic or what responses have you heard from people
in the medical community about you going to a chiropractor?
FT: I believe some people in the medical field may be
limited in accepting alternatives, or other ways of seeing
medicine that may in fact be complementary.
DK: Sure.
FT: And so the fear of the unknown, the non-controllable,
is a symptom of not being open to something we cannot
explain or we cannot control.
DK: In the case of chiropractic, like say with your arm,
the explanation is pretty simple. So you think one of the
roots is it’s just outside the sphere of control of
medicine, and that’s where the fear or concern would come
from?
