Interview with Dr. Francesca Torriani
Sept. 20th, 2006
FT: Yeah, I think that. That “I didn’t learn that in school
so it’s not valid”. Many things we learned in medical school
now have been modified. If I took what I learned in the
early 80’s on cardiac auscultation and give that explanation
to my students now, I would be completely off. It has
evolved. I think it is the same with chiropractic. It has
been on the outside. It has not been taught. A chiropractor
can actually be a good doctor, you know, can help, can
complement what we do in western medicine. So I think
that that is simply a question of time and opening up of
people.
DK: For a new idea like the simplicity of chiropractic,
the un-sticking of bones to get pressure off nerves,
how long in a wild guess would you think before that’ll
start to be accepted in the medical community? How long
does it take for an idea like that to make it’s way in?
FT: I think tens…
DK: Tens of years?
FT: Yeah, ten, twenty years. I think that part of it would
be consumer driven. I think when there is the recognition
that this works the consumers will request that these
treatments given by well trained and certified professionals
be covered by insurances.
FT: There has to be the understanding that chiropractic
school is as serious and is regulated by government
entities and by peers as any other profession. I think
that takes away the fear.
DK: I agree.
