41 years of Migraines in San Diego
Gone

Dear Dear Dr. Klein,

My headaches started when I was 15, after a motor cycle accident. The point of impact was the left side of my head. I never got treatment from a doctor and the headaches started.

Back then; there was no drug that would abort a headache in progress, so it was a lot of narcotics. I would go to the hospital and they would give me some sort of injection. I would go home and go to bed and hope it would be gone when I woke up.

I taught my daughter how to drive earlier than was legal in case she ever had to take me to the emergency room. Throughout high school, she was the one who would drive me to the emergency room. Afterward, she would drive me home and I would go to sleep, but the headaches would not be gone when I woke up.

The headaches have affected my life enough that I missed out on a lot with my kids; I missed a lot of work. There were lots of times with the kids school functions that I could not attend. I missed a lot with my husband.

Travel was a pain in the neck. I was paranoid to go somewhere without medication. Traveling usually meant at least one whole day of vacation going and coming was spent in bed because I knew I would have a headache.

Even our last vacation before Michael found you, we had to cancel our trip to Salt Lake City to see Jennifer (our daughter) because of my headache.

I have seen an acupuncturist, two other chiropractors, I am on my third neurologist. I don’t even know how many primary care doctors, and a lot of ENT’s.

Everything was a blur. My whole life was a blur. I have been living in a fog because of headaches. I have had some type of headache every single day of my life, at least since I was 15, where I was taking some kind of medication. Doctors just keep giving me more and more drugs because they can’t figure out what to give me that will work. I have tried, all the narcotics, Darvon, Vicodin, Percocet, Morphine, Dilaudid, Depakote, Topamax, Elavil, Zomig, Relax, and Fentanyl.

I have had a hellish, horrific 41 years of my life with headaches, migraines between three and five times a week but some sort of headache every day.

Instead of us being a couple, Michael has been taking care of me. We do not go outside, I survived the work week, and spent the weekends in bed, trying to recuperate.

I’ve had kidney stones more than once; three different times I passed kidney stones. I saw a urologist and I had several tests done. They put a camera up in my bladder for blood in my urine for over a year, and their conclusion was we don’t know. I still have problems with my bladder. I’ve also had my gallbladder removed, a hysterectomy, ulcers (twice), and other digestive problems.

A few weeks ago, I had one of the worst migraines I ever had. I took my Imitrex, a couple of doses, and it wasn’t showing any improvements. I also fainted. My husband was getting really nervous. He took me to the emergency room. They gave me a shot of Dilauded. It did not help my headache. They waited a couple of hours and gave me another shot of Dilauded. It still wasn’t helping. I was in really excruciating pain. They gave me a shot of Fentanyl. I just stayed in the fetal position with the sheet over my face so I wouldn’t see the lights. I was really dizzy. They took me to take a CT scan and it looked fine. Then they did a spinal tap to make sure there was no bleeding on the brain.

They kept me there so long because my blood pressure kept going down. It was 70 over 30. They started an IV. They kept giving me fluids.

By the time they released me I had been there 12 hours or so. I went home with a prescription for Percocet for pain, and the next day I spent a good part of the day throwing up I was so sick. My headache was actually worse the next day. I was still really dizzy. I was in bed for 5 days. I couldn’t get out of bed. I couldn’t get up at all except to go to the bathroom. I didn’t eat or drink for 2 and a half days. I could not lift my head.

My husband was still really worried about me, so he did a Google search and entered chiropractic, migraine, La Jolla, and that is how I found you.

He called and spoke with you and got a really good feeling. You invited him to come that night and bring me. As soon as we both met you, we knew we were going to stay. It was a nice warm feeling, a family atmosphere, and we knew that you really truly cared about your patients.

So then the next night I had my evaluation. The next night after that was my first adjustment.

That is when I got my relief!!

My headache finally went away after all that time.

So here I am.

I noticed instantly all my senses were heightened.

My headache went away.

My vision was sharper.

Everything was like a fog and it had been lifted and life was there.

Life was present.

Life had not been present before. I just existed, not living my life. Everything is in the future. A full healthy life - I can do anything I want. Michael and I can have a life together, where we haven’t been able. Michael has just been taking care of me.

Every time I look at the organ chart I wish I had found you a lot sooner. I could have spared some body parts!

It is pretty amazing.
